Poetics
My objective for this project was different than for the last. I don’t feel that it needs too much explanation, but I should clarify a few things.
I was supposed to remove myself from the narrative entirely and I managed to do that grammatically, but I feel that the work still has a personal touch to it.
Part 1 is the documentation of the movie Ferris Bueller’s Day off. This is one of my favorite films. I have seen it more times than I can count and it holds a special meaning for me at this period in my life. The story of part 1 is the recalling of my Senior Skip Day in high school back in 2007. I took the reading of the directions to be personal. This was a childhood memory for me, I considered myself still a kid at the end of high school. As I have been told I acted like one
.
The experience was an easy, bittersweet day with my friends who, with me included, were all headed in different directions and looking for different things out of our lives. The story recounts us going to lunch at a local place in town and announcing our plans for the next phase of our lives, namely college. Specifically the story notes the announcement of one of my good friends letting us all know that he was headed to Boston for school. The text notes my subsequent reaction of happiness for my buddy’s success but sadness in the fact that I was going to miss my friend. I included defining clips of the film and images I thought were pertinent to convey the feel of the movie and physical nature of my abstract feelings at the time of these events. I embedded many links (which appear as grey text) to video and images as well audio that was popular to that particular time of that particular year. The pages and the scenes that I wrote out in my narrative are all out of sequence and can be read and understood that way. The titles of the pages mirror my feelings of that time.
*The bolded fonts are my experiences and almost the entire standard font is the film.
Part 2 of this project is the experience of my high school’s mass celebration of Blessed Edmund Rice Day. I included links in the Part 2 main page that link up to the subpages for effect. I also included the Life & Works page for perspective and background of why the Church celebrates his life and considers him a holy person. My school was founded and run by three Christian Brothers and all three of them played a big part in my education and my high school experience and are still very much a part of my life today. The page includes a recording of Irish Tune from County Derry by Percy Grainger. I would have included only audio in this page but this piece is very hard to find played well and I chose to go with the best recording of the music.
I hope this provides some rationale and explanation for this project. I also hope that you enjoy experiencing it as much as I enjoyed creating it.
