Life & Works
He was normal boy born to normal parents in a difficult time. A time in which the British occupied Ireland, and Catholics were subjected to ruthless persecution in every aspect of life. The Rices were a wealthy family. His father was a business man. He was a merchant and traded shipping supplies and livestock at the town’s local port. Edmund was charged as a young boy with getting an education. When the time came, his father’s business passed to him to take over.
He did so, until one day his wife and daughter were involved in a terrible accident. His wife was killed in the accident and his daughter was left disabled. In the wake of this tragedy he began his true vocation of education and service to his suffering community.
In 1808, he began what would come to be known as the Congregation of Christian Brothers. These men have a dedication to serve their community, educate its youth, and serve the Lord.
