Edmund Rice Day

A massive moving body of green and white polo shirts makes it way.  The body is carried on feet decked in boat shoes and legs wrapped warmly in khaki garb.  The sound of pianos and Catholic hymns inundates the air and falls on the ears of the moving individuals.

The air goes from hot and humid May to cool and conditioned.  The walls are green and gold, the floor is Parquet, and in the middle of it all, an Irish emblem.  The sound from over the system is the fading Irish accent of an old yet lively priest who is ready to begin Mass.

The ritual begins as usual,

In the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit….

The priest speaks of the life of Blessed Edmund Rice and his charitable works.  The speaker jokes with the crowd.  People look on to the picture at his picture that hangs upon the wall.  Irish tunes are belted in honor of his loving deeds.  A school song that echoes his vocation plays,

Our summons to God’s purpose will always prevail.  In our hearts forever hail, Trinity, hail.

The same celebration every year.  The life, thoughts, and works of a good person are celebrated every year in the same way.  One can only think it is so the faithful can follow his example of a good and charitable life.  But one can also wonder about his thoughts, his fears, and the mind of a man whose quest was to change the His world.
